About Our Lodge

Mitchell Lodge #228 is located at 903 W. Brook Street or the corner of W Brook & 9th Streets in Mitchell, IN.

When other Masons had settled in this community, meetings were held and they labored together under a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Indiana, and in the year 1858 application was made to the Grand Lodge for a charter under which they might labor and become affiliated with other lodges under the jurisdiction of that body. On May 25th, 1858 the charter was granted and Mitchell Lodge No. 228 F & A M organized with the following named fifteen members:

1st recorded meeting: June 7th, 1858, over a general store operated by Bro. John R.Nugent

Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom (member Mitchell Lodge #228) was an American engineer, pilot in the United States Air Force, and member of the Mercury Seven selected by National Aeronautics and Space Administration's as Project Mercury astronauts to be the first Americans in outer space.
